I like writing, I like reading and I like editing. For most of my career I’ve spent my time doing some combination of all three, usually on a train or in a coffee shop or in a dark room five minutes before an impending deadline.
I’ve worked in-house and freelance in publishing, communications, journalism and academia, as a writer, an editor, a researcher, a podcast producer, and, briefly, a lecturer. I have a PhD in history and sometimes, when nobody’s looking, I also write fiction.
I mainly cover research and ideas: I like taking something that seems complex or inaccessible and finding the story at the heart of it. In short, I try to tell stories that people actually want to read, and find an angle that might surprise them. I focus particularly on the arts & humanities and climate change & sustainability.
I like creativity, curiosity, originality, learning new things, and making people think twice about something. I care about craft and I don’t use AI to write for me.
